Return Missionary (Mission Deferment)

Return missionaries who have not attended or earned credits, completed a mission deferment prior to entering the MTC, and are returning to BYUH. Admissions manages the listing of deferred students returning from a mission.

Update Your Return Status

9 months before your return semester, you will receive a reminder email from mission_deferment@byuh.edu about your return process.
  • If you wish to return earlier or later than planned, please email mission_deferment@byuh.edu your preferred semester and reason for the request. Our Admission Officer will have the final approval.
  • If you wish to cancel your return, please complete the Cancellation of Admittance Form.
  • If you are returning for the semester you originally selected, please follow the instructions below.

Ecclesiastical Endorsement

All domestic return missionaries are required to have an updated ecclesiastical endorsement within one year of the semester they are returning to.
  1. You are responsible for scheduling appointments with the appropriate Church leaders (Mission President, Bishop, or Stake President) and
  2. Email mission_deferment@byuh.edu once you have completed your endorsement. Failure to do so may result in the loss of your eligibility to return to BYU–Hawaii.
Your updated endorsement confirms your commitment to abide by the Honor Code, which includes:
  1. The  Academic Honesty Policy
  2. The Dress and Grooming Standards
  3. The applicable Residential Living Standards

Complete Your Intent to Enroll (ITE) Process

Once we receive your Ecclesiastical Endorsement and your return is approved, check your email for "BYU–Hawaii Intent to Enroll" (ITE). You must Accept and complete ALL necessary steps that follow your acceptance.

After ITE Completion:
  1. Create your student account.
  2. Complete the New Student Onboarding Checklist (sent via email after completing your ITE).
  3. Clear any holds on your student account

ACT/SAT & Offiical High School Transcript

Double-check with Admissions to ensure your Official High School Transcript, ACT, or SAT scores have been submitted. Failure to submit these documents will result in a hold on your student account.

The Return Missionary Voucher (RMV) Award is a recruiting scholarship to award exemplary missionaries who reside or have served in Oceania and the Asia Pacific Rim but do not qualify for the IWORK Work-Study Program.

Refresh and Resubmit Your Application

Resubmitting your application allows us to receive your updated financials, which will be used for your reapplication for financial aid, visa documents, or both.
  • Click "Apply Online".
  • In your "About Me" section, answer the following questions accordingly:
    1. Have you attended BYU–Hawaii before? → Select "Yes".
    2. Enter your student ID.
    3. Select "Enrolled in on-campus classes."
  • Fill in the rest of your application, you will only need to complete one return essay—simply write "Mission deferment" in the text box.
  • Ensure your application is submitted before the deadline.

English Proficiency Test Waiver

Your previous English Proficiency Test from your initial admission will be honored regardless of whether it is expired or not.
  • Please notify Admissions at the start of your application, and they will waive the requirement for you.
