What We Look For

When evaluating applicants, BYU–Hawaii considers a variety of factors. Admission to BYU–Hawaii isn’t only based on traditional metrics. Instead, each application undergoes a holistic review, where the whole student is carefully considered and not just their academic performance. The application process helps admissions officers learn who you are and if you would be a good fit for the BYU–Hawaii ohana.

The BYU–Hawaii Student

BYU–Hawaii’s principal student population is from the Oceanic and Asia areas of the Church, including Hawaii. We also look to include students with ties to those areas, such as those with a cultural heritage or experience in those countries or cultures, though they do not currently reside in Oceania or Asia.

BYU–Hawaii is looking for students who are ready to participate in an intercultural experience as they study and prepare to be examples “to the world of intercultural peace and unity through living the teachings of Jesus Christ” (BYU–Hawaii Vision Statement). As part of its mission, BYU–Hawaii helps those who are striving to be disciples of Jesus Christ in their efforts and preparation to build the Kingdom of God.

Special Consideration

Seminary or Missionary Service

In accordance with BYU–Hawaii's mission "to integrate both spiritual and secular learning," applicants who finished four years of seminary or institute and/or served a full-time mission are given priority consideration. There is no need to submit any records for seminary attendance or missionary service as this information is recorded in the connected Church accounts.

Leadership responsibilities and extracurricular activities may also be used as determining factors in admission decisions.

Alumni Legacy

Admissions officers also consider those with legacy alumni connections as they are likely familiar with BYU–Hawaii and its purpose.

PathwayConnect Finishers

Priority consideration is given to applicants who have completed PathwayConnect and/or a certificate or associate degree through BYU-Pathway Worldwide. The completion of the PathwayConnect program will waive BYU–Hawaii’s high school diploma/secondary education requirements. Read more about the BYU–Hawaii BYU-Pathway Partnership Program.
