Return Missionary (Discontinuance)

Return missionaries who have attended and earned credits at BYUH, completed a discontinuance prior to entering the MTC, and are returning to BYUH. The Office of the Registrar manages the listing of discontinued students returning from a mission.

You are a return missionary who has permanent residency in the United States.

Update Your Return Status

9 months before your return semester, you are responsible for contacting the Office of Registrar about your return status.

  • If you wish to cancel, return earlier or later than planned, please email registrars@byuh.edu your preferred semester and reason for the request.
  • If you are returning for the semester you originally selected, please follow the instructions below.

Ecclesiastical Endorsement

All domestic return missionaries are required to have an updated ecclesiastical endorsement within one year of the semester they are returning to.
  • You are responsible for scheduling appointments with the appropriate Church leaders (Mission President, Bishop, or Stake President) and ensuring that your endorsement is completed on time.
Your updated endorsement confirms your commitment to abide by the Honor Code, which includes:
  1. The  Academic Honesty Policy
  2. The Dress and Grooming Standards
  3. The applicable Residential Living Standards
Once your endorsement is cleared, please inform the Office of Registrar.

9 months before your return semester, you will receive a reminder email from mission_deferment@byuh.edu about your return process.
  • If you plan to cancel your return, please complete the Cancellation of Admittance Form.
  • If you plan to return earlier, later or return for the semester you originally selected, please follow the instructions below.

Refresh and Resubmit Your Application

You have to refresh and resubmit your application according to the semester you plan to return. Doing so allows us to receive your updated financials, which will be used for your reapplication for financial aid, visa documents, or both.
  • Click "Apply Online".
  • In your "About Me" section, answer the following questions accordingly:
    1. Have you attended BYU–Hawaii before? → Select "Yes".
    2. Enter your student ID.
    3. Select "Enrolled in on-campus classes."
  • Fill in the rest of your application, you will only need to complete one return essay—simply write "Mission deferment" in the text box.
  • Ensure your application is submitted before the deadline.

Refresh and Resubmit Your Application

Your previous English Proficiency Test from your initial admission will be honored regardless of whether it is expired or not.
  • Please notify Admissions at the start of your application, and they will waive the requirement for you.
