New Freshmen (NF) are high school/secondary school graduates with no university credits or with university credits completed prior to high school graduation. To be considered for admission we encourage the following:

  • Complete an application at www.besmart.com
  • Receive an ecclesiastical endorsement
  • Fulfill the corresponding academic requirement listed in country criteria
  • Complete the International Student Aid Application (ISAA)
  • Fulfill the English Proficiency Requirement
  • Obtain a cumulative GPA no lower than 3.0

Applicants who have earned fewer than 24 earned semester hours of college credit and have already graduated high school are transfer freshmen (TH). Transfer freshmen must submit high school transcripts and college transcripts. 

Transfer Students (TH) are applicants who have attended university since graduated from high school with fewer than 24 semester/36 quarter hours of graded university credits. To be considered for admission we encourage the following:

  • Complete an application at www.besmart.com
  • Receive an ecclesiastical endorsement
  • Fulfill the corresponding academic requirement listed in country criteria
  • Complete the International Student Aid Application (ISAA)
  • Fulfill the English Proficiency Requirement
  • Submit an official transcript from each university the applicant has ever attended
  • Obtain a cumulative GPA no lower than 3.0

Transfer Students (TR) are applicants who have attended university since graduated from high school with at least 24 semester/36 quarter hours of graded university credits. To be considered for admission we encourage the following:

  • Complete an application at www.besmart.com
  • Receive an ecclesiastical endorsement
  • complete the International Student Aid Application (ISAA)
  • fulfill the English Proficiency Requirement
  • submit an official transcript from each university the applicant has ever attended
  • Obtain a cumulative GPA no lower than 3.0

Please be aware that updated transcripts from ALL PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED COLLEGES must be sent along with your application. Not listing all institutions both U.S. and international you have attended/are attending can result in a loss of credit and dismissal. It is your responsibility to make sure an official transcript from each institution, including LDS Institute, is submitted before the application deadline.

Former Students (FS) are applicants with  no additional credits since last attending BYU-Hawaii. To be considered for admission we encourage the following:

  • update Part 1 & 2 of the application at www.besmart.com
  • receive a new ecclesiastical endorsement
  • complete the International Student Aid Application (ISAA)
  • be cleared of all holds from Financial Services and Office of Honor
  • Obtain a cumulative GPA no lower than 3.0

Former Transfers (FT) are applicants with additional credits since last attending BYU-Hawaii. To be considered for admission we encourage the following:

  • update Part 1 & 2 of the application at www.besmart.com
  • receive a new ecclesiastical endorsement
  • complete the International Student Aid Application (ISAA)
  • submit an official transcript from each university the applicant has ever attended
  • be cleared of all holds from Financial Services and Office of Honor
  • Obtain a cumulative GPA no lower than 3.0

International applicants are defined as applicants who will require a VISA in order to enter the United States to pursue their education. Countries in which most of these applicants finish their secondary education adapt a different education system from the US education system.

Country Criteria

The academic performance of international applicants will be evaluated according to the academic standards of their respective countries. Please refer to Country Criteria for further information. International applicants who have completed their high school education within the States should notify the Admission Office when they submit their applications. 

English Proficiency Exam

International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the use of English in academic level. They are required to take a standardized examination administered by various educational testing services. Please refer to English Test Requirements

ISAA & IWORK

International applicants are required to prove that they are financially capable during their stay in the US. They are required to complete the International Student Scholarship Application (ISAA) and provide relevant documents. Students from the Far East and South Pacific may also apply for the International Work Opportunity Returnability Kuleana (IWORK) program. International Applicants

Online Enrollment Students (OE) are applicants who have taken or are taking BYU-Hawaii Online classes. To be considered for admission we encourage the following:

  • complete an application at www.besmart.com
  • receive an ecclesiastical endorsement
  • fulfill the corresponding academic requirement listed in country criteria
  • complete the International Student Aid Application (ISAA)
  • fulfill the English Proficiency Requirement
  • submit an official transcript from each university the applicant has ever attended
